We often think of work as something we do for others, but it is more important to understand what our work does for us. Most of us spend at least one third of our lives at work. If we don’t count the hours we are asleep, we work at least half of our waking lives. So if you’re not getting what you want or need from work, that’s something you need to change.
A trivial answer for this question would be money. Sure, most of us work to make a living and have the income we need or want. But money can’t be the only thing that work gives you. If it is, work will become miserable and you will be spending your life living for the weekend. But if you analyze the many things you can get from work, even work you may not like, you’ll discover that the opportunity to enjoy work exists in most human endeavors.
Begin by making a list of things you would like to get from your ideal job beyond money. Dig deep. Think of things like a sense of accomplishment, travel, friendship, satisfaction in helping others, growth, etc. Do you get these in your current job? If not, use the list to fine-tune your career plan and be more targeted and purposeful in your job search.
