What do you enjoy spending money on?

We’ve all heard that money doesn’t buy happiness. While this is true, if you spend money wisely it can definitely help you create the conditions for happiness and joy. This is easier said than done. The trick to spending money wisely is to first know what it means to you. There is no one correct answer.

Each of us value different things. Some of us may regret money spent on the mall, others may enjoy that. Some may enjoy spending money on travel while others would prefer to buy a new car. Getting to the right answer however is not as trivial as it seems because we’re all victims of self-deceit as well as modern marketing techniques that bombard us with images of what someone else wants us to like or want. What we think we like or want is often just a surface illusion, while our true likes and wants lie deep within our psyches.

As with everything else about self knowledge, you need to dig deep. Ask yourself this question over and over. Be curious and self critical. Don’t blindly believe the voice inside your head, question yourself. Most importantly, resist all outside influence by questioning the motive behind every image or video on social media or TV.

Once you’ve asked yourself this question many times and meditated on it, the things that you truly enjoy spending money on will surface, and you will learn to minimize financial regret and optimize your finances.
